Feliway Friends – Help my Cats Hate Each Other!

With the UK’s cat population growing every year, the number of households with more than one feline friend is also on the rise. However how do our four-legged feline companions cope with sharing their home?

Cats have evolved as solitary hunter’s and it is important for them to establish a territory. A territory is considered to be a space which envelops the resources a cat needs to survive, breed, thrive and carry outs its normal daily repertoire. Although cats are extremely territorial, they will go to great lengths to avoid physical confrontation. As a solitary animal, it makes good survival sense for them to avoid any situation which may lead to an injury. This includes getting into a scrap with the cat’s in close proximity.

Cats use scent to mark their territory, both from scent glands on their face and also from their paws when scratching. These scent markings not only act as a boundary, but also as a time stamp. It says to other cats, ‘this is my patch and I come her at night’.

It is easy to see why, that when several cats are confined to the same territory how conflicts and behavioural problems can arise.

Signs of problems in a Multi-Cat Household include:

  • Excessive scratching
  • Excessive spraying/urination
  • Hissing & Growling
  • Fighting
  • Hiding
  • Stress related disease (idiopathic cystitis)

So how can we help to keep our beloved feline friends to live harmoniously in the same house?

The most crucial step is to give each cat their own ‘territory’. Provide them with their own safe space, scratching post and eating area. This will minimise conflict, as they are not competing over the same resources.

You can also use a product called FELIWAY® FRIENDS, which is a synthetic copy of the cat appeasing pheromone (CAP) naturally produced by a nursing mother to her kittens after birth. This pheromone helps the kittens feel safe and secure and promotes a bond between them and their mother. FELIWAY® FRIENDS is clinically proven to help reduce tension and conflicts between cats in multi-cat households.

  • 84% of cat owners saw their cats were significantly getting along better after using FELIWAY FRIENDS
  • Only product clinically proven to help with conflicts between household cats
  • 3 recent publications support the efficacy of FELIWAY FRIENDS and 2 recent publications on the efficacy of CAP (cat appeasing pheromone)
  • FELIWAY FRIENDS is supported worldwide by leading certified veterinary behaviourists
